Before hurricane season (by June 1)
- Find your door’s label or paperwork and check that it is wind-rated for your home. If you can’t find it, we can identify the door and its rating.
- Have the springs, cables, track anchors and rollers inspected. A storm is the worst time for a worn part to fail.
- Make sure your opener has a working battery backup for power outages.
- If your door has a manufacturer-approved bracing kit, check that all braces and pins are in the garage and you know how to install them.
- Replace a cracked or missing bottom weather seal to keep water out.
When a storm is on the way
- Close the door fully and lock it, or unplug the opener and use the manual lock.
- Install hurricane braces if your door has them.
- Move cars and loose items so they can’t hit the door from inside.
- Charge your phone and save our number in case the door is damaged.
During the storm
- Never open the garage door during high winds.
- Stay out of the garage if the door is flexing or rattling heavily.
After the storm
- Look for dents, bent panels, loose tracks and frayed cables before you use the door.
- If anything looks bent or the door won’t move smoothly, don’t force it. Call us for emergency repair.
- Take photos of any damage for your insurance claim.
